Notebook of R' Elazar Azkari
16th c. · The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary
The autograph notebook of R' Elazar Azkari (1533–1600) — the Eretz Yisrael mystic, poet, and author of Sefer Chareidim, who lived and taught in Safed and Jerusalem — comprising commentaries, novellae, sermons, drafts, copies, and personal notes mostly written in his own hand. Famously preserves his hymn Yedid Nefesh in the author's own handwriting (image 16 in the viewer). Later glosses and marginal notes were added by figures including Nathan of Gaza. A downloadable PDF facsimile is also available.
