Likutei Moharan — first edition (Ostrog, 1808), printed in Rebbe Nachman's lifetime
Ostrog, 1808 · The National Library of Israel
The first edition of Likutei Moharan — the foundational book of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov's teachings (1772–1810) — printed in Ostrog in 1808 during the Rebbe's own lifetime and under his direction. The teachings were delivered orally by the Rebbe and written down by his closest disciple, Reb Noson of Nemirov, who edited them, secured the haskamot, and brought the book to press. Of all the books Reb Noson would later publish in his master's name, this is the only one to appear in the Rebbe's lifetime; the rest, including Likutei Moharan Tinyana and the entire Breslov literature, came afterwards. Among Breslover Chassidim the volume itself has long been held as a segulah, a tangible link to the Rebbe and to the moment his teachings entered the world. A downloadable PDF facsimile is also available.
